As someone who frequents Lake Michigan, I beg friends to let me do family photos while lake side. There’s nothing I love more than documenting the in-between moments. The ones that feel wild, honest, and a little windswept. This early-fall family session was just that: a playful, joy-filled evening by the water that perfectly captured the beauty of the season and the heart of family life.

There’s something about Lake Michigan in early fall that feels like magic. The air is crisp but gentle, the lake glows a little moodier, and the wind seems to carry laughter farther across the shoreline. This sweet family embraced all of it, wind-tousled hair, sandy toes, and playful moments that made this session feel effortless and free.

We spent the evening chasing waves and each other, the golden light flickering across the water as the sun dipped low. The kids ran barefoot through the sand while mom and dad laughed behind them. The kind of joyful chaos that makes family photography so special. Nothing was posed for long; instead, we leaned into the natural rhythm of the evening. The giggles, the cuddles, the moments between the moments.

To wrap up the session, we celebrated the baby of the family’s first birthday right there on the beach. A simple cake smash in the sand. A homemade cake, frosting-covered fingers and the lake breeze swirling around us. It couldn’t have been a more perfect way to close out a season of firsts.
